As an aside, your bullet points really spoke to my soul. I was wrapping up a PhD application for an IR program but decided to abandon it due to the, let’s say, less than positive prospects for the field.

Yeah…we’re actually the same generation. I won’t get into it here, but this was going to be my 2nd career plan. Now I have to find a real job.
But I know that if I would have gone straight into it I would’ve been just another cog keeping the establishment running.

IR beyond the nation state
Not sure the world is ready for that… but, I’m fed up with nationalism and the nation state.
And tired of reading IR practitioners who serve to develop elaborate rationales for terrible nation state behaviors.
I was going to suggest 'Entente Discordant', but voted for IR After Dark
