Thanks so much for writing this, Van, painful as the writing must have been, painful as it is to acknowledge the truth of what you say. Of course I myself have no consoling words to offer. Empires have collapsed before, and will again (if humanity survives this one), but that's cold comfort. My wife Peggy and I have both managed to live through medical emergencies that could have killed both of us, and would have killed us if we'd been born 50 years ago. But we weren't, and so we're still "here," treasuring the moment we're given together as "reprieve." There's no guarantees built into that, no "security," but love and care for others are funny that way. They have their own logic and toughness and calm, leavened by Bach, Beethoven, Schubert and on and on. "I'll just let the mystery be," as the song goes (the refrain of the Leftovers season two opener).
