A humble suggestion for avoiding methodological nationalism. When discussing strategic positioning or policy, talk about the "US government" (or "Washington") rather than "the US," "America," or "the USA." Why? The 320 million people who live in the USA are not the same as the 1% of the population (2.9 million of whom have no policy-making role) in the government in Washington. We have recently seen convincing evidence that 99% of the US population is not well represented by that government. @undiplomatic
Totally! There are places in the essay where the editors made methodological nationalist changes and it was impractical to override them...but in most places we tried to do as you say here, which makes sense
