As a statement of the content of what New Zealand foreign policy should be, this is world-leading progressive foreign policy shit. Everyone should be paying attention to what New Zealand’s Labour Party is saying…but don’t let that be a distraction from the economic populism that you need to address society’s needs.
New Zealand’s Labour Party just held a party conference where it announced a new foreign policy platform that is peace-oriented, anti-militarist, and independent. The soundbite that went viral was that New Zealand would never associate itself with AUKUS under a Labour government. But the larger framework that justifies that decision is what’s most remarkable—a potential model of progressive foreign policy for other nations to emulate, or at least learn from.
But the Labour Party itself has not yet embraced economic populism. The platform has contradictions. And there are signs it remains an elite-centered party disconnected from the working class.
