I’ve recently given remarks in a couple private talks on the same broad topic: 1) the similarities and differences between the Cold War and today, and 2) how “great-power competition” facilitates political repression at home and abroad.
Because the talks are private, I can’t share the event audio. But I have my remarks from one of the events and have included it here. It’s less than ten minutes, for subscribers only.
The gist:
Rivalry then and now created an anti-democratic political terrain at home and abroad.
Geopolitics is racial in a way that it wasn’t against the Soviet Union.
The US is doing a primacy strategy today, but much of the Cold War could be thought of as a balancing game. Since the ‘80s we have a dominating motivation that was different prior to that point.
The structure of the world system today is a source of Sino-US confrontation.
